I want to research the Pro’s and Con’s of drinking coffee. I want to know how much it affects a person’s health if they drink it so much that they feel they need it to function. I’m interested in this subject because my grandmother drinks coffee faithfully. She drinks hot coffee and cold iced coffee. She says it gets her going with the hot coffee and it perks her up with the iced coffee. Many advertisements say coffee is not always good for you and yet coffee shops are becoming more and more popular. Starbucks has been very popular. Now there is Scooters and 7 Brew competitions. People seem hooked or addicted on a particular brand and need it every day as if it helps them function. I believe too much coffee is not good for a person. I believe coffee with caffeine is especially not good for a person.

What are the positive effects of drinking coffee regularly? What are the negative effects of drinking coffee regularly? Does it affect your body or your brain? Can there be too much coffee consumed in a day? One source for my inquiries is the “Is Coffee Good For You?” article in the AARP Bulletin my grandmother gets as a senior over 50 years old. Dr. Adams says, “that for older adults, the caffeine in coffee speeds up the metabolism and burns calories and suppresses the appetite.” (1) Another source is the internet AI Overview, the internet website healthline.com subject Benefits and Side Effects of Drinking Coffee, video “The Real Reason You Should Drink Coffee” You Tube with Dr. Eric Berg, DC. After reading and digesting the information from these sources, I will have to dissert what is true by facts, what is opinions and what I should discard because it theory without proof through research and experience.

Pros and cons of coffee

Dr. Adam shares the benefits for adults drinking caffeine coffee regularly as a good thing. He points out the speeding up of metabolism to burn calories and can actually cause weight loss. Also caffeine and decaffeinated coffee can improve some kinds of brain activity and lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Although these are positive effects of drinking coffee, if your body cannot tolerate the excessive drinking of coffee, a person can have risky body functions such as increased heart rate or higher blood pressure.

The AI overview from the internet indicates caffeine is the primary active ingredient in coffee and it does stimulate brain activity. From studies done, type 2 diabetes risk and some cancers are lower with moderate drinking of caffeine coffee. With these positive effects, can result in addition and withdrawal can cause headaches and fatigue.

Dr. Berg recommends one cup of coffee a day because there are chemicals in coffee that is good for you. It comes from fermented coffee beans. Caffeine comes from an insecticide. It inhabits adenosine that keeps us wake up. It can help you focus and learn better. It can increase stomach acids and help with digestion. Caffeine can enhance pain medication.

Conclusion

The summary for me seems that coffee has more benefits than I ever thought. I will not condemn my grandmother for the coffee she drinks but rather think of the benefits it is for her.
